Penang is well-known for its food, and with good reason. From the fragrant hawker stalls of George Town to the roadside warungs of the Penang countryside, there are endless opportunities to enjoy delicious meals. But with so many options, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here are a few of the best places to eat in Penang, whether you're looking for a quick bite or a leisurely meal.

For a quick and easy meal, head to one of Penang's many hawker stalls. There, you'll find an array of tantalizing dishes, from steaming bowls of noodles to freshly-grilled satay skewers. If you're feeling adventurous, try one of Penang's famous street foods, such as asam laksa or char kway teow. Or, if you prefer something more familiar, there are plenty of stalls serving up chicken rice and other Malaysian staples.

If you're looking for a more leisurely dining experience, Penang has no shortage of great restaurants. In George Town, check out Canteen by Fukuya for Japanese-inspired cuisine, or Long Beach Café for fresh seafood with stunning sea views. For something truly unique, head to Eastern & Oriental Hotel's 1885 Restaurant, which serves colonial-style fare in an elegant setting. Penang is also home to many excellent Chinese restaurants, such as Kek Lok Si Temple's Tian Hou Gong Vegetarian Restaurant and Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul. No matter what your taste buds are craving, you're sure to find something to your liking in Penang.

What to order at each restaurant

Penang is well-known for its street food, and there are plenty of delicious options to choose from. When it comes to deciding what to order, it can be tough to know where to start. Here are a few suggestions to help you make the most of your Penang street food experience:

At Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul, the chendul - a sweet and refreshing dessert made with coconut milk, pandan leaves, and palm sugar - is a must-try. For something savory, the lor bak - pork that has been marinated in five-spice powder and deep-fried - is also very popular.

If you're looking for somewhere to get a hearty meal, than Keng Nam Heng Pau is the place for you. The pau - steamed buns filled with either chicken or mushrooms - are delicious, and the fried mee is also very tasty.

For something a little different, Nasi Lemak Buntal is a great option. The nasi lemak - rice cooked in coconut milk and served with various side dishes - is very flavorful, and the buntal - deep-fried fishballs - are a unique twist on a classic dish.

These are just a few of the many wonderful restaurants in Penang that offer street food. So whether you're looking for something sweet, savory, or just plain different, you're sure to find it here.

Regional dishes you must try

Penang is a food lover's paradise, with a diverse range of regional dishes to choose from. If you're looking for something spicy, the Penang laksa is a must-try. This popular noodle soup is made with a piquant tamarind-based broth, and topped with fresh seafood and vegetables. For something heartier, George Town is famous for its nasi kandar rice dishes, which are often served with chicken, beef or fish curry. And of course, no visit to Penang would be complete without sampling the region's famed coconut roti canai. This flaky flatbread is typically served with curry dipping sauces, and makes for a delicious breakfast or snack. So whether you're in the mood for something spicy, salty or sweet, Penang has a dish to suit every taste.
